How to Speed Up Your Computer

5 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer
1. Free up the hard disk space - Windows XP, Vista have the Disk cleanup Tool can help you free up your hard disk space. The utility identifies files that you can delete safely, will let you decide whether you want to delete some or all of files.

The Disk Cleanup tool will remove : Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet files, Empty the Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Programs installed file that no longer need.

To use Disk Cleanup:

1. Double click My Computer ->right click and select Properties -> select General on the top -> click Disk Cleanup

Temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

2. Check boxes for files that you want to delete, and then click OK.

3. When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.

After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.

2. Speed Up Access to Data - Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

To use Disk Defragmenter:

1. Double click My Computer ->right click and select Properties -> select Tool on the top -> click Defragment Now...

2. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button. After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.

3. To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to demonstrate the progress—but your hard drive is still being defragmented.

4. After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results. Click View Report to display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, To close the View Report dialog box, click Close. To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.

3. Scan and Repair Disk Errors - As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
To use the Error-Checking:

1. Double click My Computer ->right click and select Properties -> select Tool on the top -> click Check Now...

2. In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

3. If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

Only select the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

4. Protect your computer against spyware - Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using Microsoft Windows Defender(

5. Learn all about ReadyBoost - If you're using Windows Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory.

Windows 7 - First Look

This is Windows 7 Release Candidate Build 7100.0.0:

Windows 7 Review - Picking a Product Edition

In the following chart, I've provided one sensible view of the actual Windows 7 product lineup:

Windows 7 Home Basic - This version of Windows 7 will only be sold with new low-end PCs in other countries. It targeted at emerging markets. In fact, it will not be available outside of emerging markets. So you can simply pretend it does not exist.

Windows 7 Starter - includes the basic Windows 7 feature set. You get the basic user interface, Windows Basic, but not Windows Aero, which provides the "glass" windows and Aero Desktop Enhancements such as Aero Peek, Aero Snaps, Aero Shake, Aero Background, and the like. You get Windows Search, Action Center, Windows Firewall and User Account Control (UAC), Parental Controls, Windows ReadyDrive, Windows Backup with system image capabilities (but not network-based backups), Internet Explorer 8, Windows Gadgets, Games Explorer with basic games only (FreeCell, Hearts, Minesweeper, Purble Palace, Solitaire, and Spider Solitaire), and a basic set of utilities like Calculator, Paint, Windows Fax and Scan, WordPad, and XP Viewer.

Windows 7 Home Premium - Moving up to Windows 7 Home Premium, the picture improves dramatically, and I believe that most consumers will be happy with the feature set provided by this version. Windows 7 Home Premium builds on the core feature set from Windows 7 Starter, adding the wonderful Windows Aero user interface as well as all the nice Aero Desktop Enhancements that are unique to this Windows version. You get Windows Flip 3D, Live Taskbar Thumbnails, and live icon previews in Explorer. The net gain here is a user interface that is both more attractive and more efficient than the one provided with Starter. In fact, these UI improvements are, as far as I'm concerned, reason enough to upgrade. But there's more.

Windows 7 Professional - The leap from Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional is quite a bit less profound, though of course certain people will simply have to get this version because it includes key business-oriented features like support for Active Directory-based domains. Windows 7 Professional users also gain access to Windows XP Mode, a fully-licensed version of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 that runs in a virtual machine under Windows Virtual PC and lets you solve any lingering compatibility issues caused by the big upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows 7 Ultimate - Includes every single Windows 7 feature, compared to Windows 7 Professional, however, there are only a few key functional differences that apply to individuals, making this a pretty uninteresting upgrade - the BitLocker and BitLocker To Go drive encryption technologies; and Microsoft's managed corporate customers. None are particularly interesting or relevant to individuals. If you can live without that however--perhaps by using a third party disk encryption tool, then you can safely ignore Windows 7 Ultimate.

Popular program Adobe Reader has a security flaw

Attackers are making the rounds and exploiting a critical security flaw in Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9.

Earlier versions of the PDF-related software are also affected by the critical security flaw, which could cause the applications to crash and potentially let an attacker gain control of a person's computer, Adobe Systems warned.

Adobe has released security update 9.1.1 for Adobe Reader 9.1 and Acrobat 9.1 to resolve this security issue. Adobe recommends users of Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9 update to Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and Acrobat 9.1.1. Adobe recommends users of Acrobat 8 update to Acrobat 8.1.5 and users of Acrobat 7 update to Acrobat 7.1.2. For Adobe Reader users who can’t update to Adobe Reader 9.1, Adobe has provided the Adobe Reader 8.1.5 and Adobe Reader 7.1.2 updates.

Free Process Explorer Replacement to Windows Task Manager

Windows has its own task manager for monitoring all the processes running in your PC. But the information available in Task Manager is limited. Process Explorer is a freeware and a small application which shows you more details about the process/ applications/dll and everything thats running under Windows. Process Explorer is intended for advanced users. The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in.

The capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

Here are screen prints of Process Explorer:

Deposit checks with your iPhone

The Internet has cut down lot of the paperwork out of banking, saved customers alot of time.

Now, the privately-held USAA Bank intends to let customers deposit checks via a pending update to the bank's iPhone app. the feature will require customers to photograph both the front and back of the check with their iPhone's camera, simply send the images to the bank via the app and presto, the check is credited to that customer's account. They can then void and destroy the paper check; it's no longer needed.

Here are some tips for keeping your system up & running, problem-free:

  • Defragment your hard drive monthly. This will keep application load-times down, and you will see a general improvement in system speed.
  • Scan your system weekly for spyware. Useful tools to help you do this are on the Useful Software & Links:

Microsoft Windows Defender (antispyware)

Spybot Search & Destroy - a very good spyware removal tool

AVG Anti-Virus - a good antivirus program that is free for personal use!

ZoneAlarm - a firewall program (personal edition is free!)

  • Don't install programs, especially free programs, that you are unsure about, and never click on any pop-ups arbitrarily! Research any programs by searching for the program name and the word "spyware" in a search engine.
  • If you leave your system running constantly, set your hard drive to power-down after a period of inactivity (preferably 30 minutes), by changing the energy options of your system (available on Windows® machines under the Screen Saver settings page). This will dramatically increase the lifespan of your hard drive.

  • Backup, backup, backup - in the event your hard drive fails, make sure you have all your digital photos safely stored elsewhere!
  • Get a free email account, and use it to sign up for everything online. Only give your personal email account information to friends & family. This will significantly reduce the amount of spam you receive. You can sign up for free email accounts at websites such as Hotmail.com and Yahoo.com.
  • Make sure you are running a firewall.
